The chair my father and the dog
My father bought the chair in the photo for himself in the late fifties or early sixties. The chair brings back memories of a hair pulling contest with my big sister at age 7 or 8. One time not too many years after that I smeared saddle soap all over it thinking I was doing something nice for my dad. It's made many moves over the years. Not to long ago he got a new chair that's easier for him to get in and out of. He was going to put this one in storage. I asked if I could take it home he said yes. I haven't eked out a proper place for the chair yet but the dog seems to like it where it is. I revere my father immensely. As a young person I worked for him logging, ranching and trucking hay. He was fun to work with always encouraging, supportive and with a work ethic beyond any one else I know. He's 85 years old and still works 6 days a week and doesn't know how to stop. The dog came to us when he was about a year old. He was scared and vulnerable and a bit snarly. At first he would growl at me when I would approach him to let him off his chain. We were going to try to find him a home. With no immediate takers we decided maybe we should keep him. My mom, mother in law and best friend/ business partner were all afraid of him. They all have come to love him like a grand child and no longer fear him. For the first year of his life he grew up in a house with several small children and at least one adult that was less than kind to the dog. We noticed early on that he could be trusted completely around children but not adults. People we meet will often ask if they can pet him, if they have children we tell them the kids can pet him but he can't be trusted regarding new or unfamiliar adults. It's always been surprising to us they don't know us or the dog but they trust what were telling them is true and let the kid or kids love the dog. I don't recall anyone ever saying that's ok we'll just move on. One young couple stepped away from a stroller so he get close enough for their young child to touch him. Almost every morning a little before the alarm clock goes off he gets on our bed puts himself between us and nestles his head against my stomach. He is such a sweetness in our life. I like him beside me in that chair and I'm guessing my dad doesn't mind.
Lovely post, sounds like a lovely dog
