소설 '대지'의 작가 펄 벅이
1960년 우리나라를 처음 방문했을 때의 일입니다.

황혼에 경주 시골길을 지나고 있는데,
한 농부가 소달구지를 끌고 가고 있었습니다.
달구지에는 가벼운 짚단이 조금 실려 있었지만
농부는 자기 지게에 따로 짚단을 지고 있었습니다.

합리적인 서양 사람이라면 당연히 이상하게 볼 광경이었습니다.
힘들게 지게에 짐을 따로 지고 갈 게 아니라 달구지에
짐을 싣고 농부도 타고 가면 편했을 것입니다.

통역을 통해 펄 벅이 물었습니다.
"왜 소달구지에 짐을 싣지 않고 힘들게 갑니까?"
그러자 농부가 대답했습니다.
"에이, 어떻게 그럴 수 있습니까?
저도 일을 했지만, 소도 하루 종일 힘든 일을 했으니
짐을 서로 나누어져야지요."

펄 벅은 감탄하며 말했습니다.
"나는 저 장면 하나로 한국에서 보고 싶은 걸 다 보았습니다.
농부가 소의 짐을 거들어주는 모습만으로도
한국의 위대함을 충분히 느꼈습니다."

비록 말 못 하는 짐승이라도 존귀하게 여겼던 농부처럼
우리는 본디 배려를 잘하는 민족이었습니다.

그런데 요즘은 어떤가요?
'나만 아니면 된다'는 식의 이기적인 사고로 꽉 차 있지는 않은가요?
펄 벅이 만난 시골 농부의 이야기는 배려를 잃어버린
지금 우리에게 강한 울림을 줍니다.
