Celebrating the Rich History and Tradition of Åland Flag Day
Åland Flag Day commemorates the history of the region’s distinctive banner. The first unofficial flag, a blue-and-yellow design introduced in 1922, was banned by Finnish authorities in 1935. Following the 1952 self-government law, Åland was granted the right to its own official flag, and the current design—a red cross with yellow borders on a blue background—has been in use since 1953. First celebrated on April 24, 1954, Åland Flag Day is now observed annually on the last Sunday of April. (Archive photo from 2020).
