The state of African Democracy
We've been blaming our leaders and the West for too long.
Previously, the assertion is that we have a leadership problem, but I discovered that we don't have a leadership problem. Rather, we have a citizenry problem.
The reason democracy is considered the best form of government is because it is about the people. Democracy makes it mandatory for the leadership to be accountable to the people. If not satisfied with their performance, they have their voters card to vote them out in the next elections i.e. if impeachment or recall fails to work.
In Nigeria and Africa however, the result is different.
We worship leaders who are not performing when they give us peanuts or because of our primordial connections.
We are quick to give them a second chance when they come begging for our votes and we continuously vote for them.
Until we regroup as citizens and demand our leaders to govern accountably, we will remain where we are for another century. By then, there may emerge a new system where the West and co will re-annex us and sap our resources. Independence in the next phase will take several centuries.
Finally,
We, the people, are the boss, and we will get the kind of political leadership, be it good or bad, that we demand and deserve.” John F. Kennedy
