Alchemic Dharma & The Imposters

There are a lot of self-styled alchemists out here these days. It’s a cool word. I like it. If there were not so many alchemists out here already I’d claim the title. I’d spell it with a K. Alkhemist. Closer to its original spelling.
Alchemy has an interesting etymology. It’s a word that travels through the millennia. As a long-lived fascination, it gets redefined along the way by every civilization that embraces it.
As many already kno,w the “chem” in alchemy is the same chem that’s in “chemistry.” And the way I understand it, the same chem, in Kemet. That’s Egypt, if not greater Africa. So let’s start there. It’s not a great mystery. In ancient Egypt, Khem referred to the black earth of the Nile region, differentiating it from the non-black desert sands.
In ancient Greek, Khēmeia, referred to, "The art of transmuting metals," also tied to khymia, "the pouring together" or "infusion." We can see where this is going. It should be no secret to anyone by this point in time that the Greeks were heavily indebted to Egypt for its knowledge, wisdom, maths & philosophies. We are a bit more generous than those that accuse the Greeks of “stealing” African wisdom. The contemporaries knew from whence the knowledge came. It was their descendants circa the 18th century, again, being generous, that chose to conveniently forget the lineage.
Digression. We suspect that chimera, is lexiconical alchemy, mixing the original root to define the melding of living critters rather than metals.
Arabic, Al-kīmiyā. "The black earth art." the definite article, “al,” attached to the Greek root. We also get a hint right here, that “earth” can easily be removed, leaving alchemy to be defined simply as a “black art.”
Another reminder that it was the Arabs of Islam that prompted the European Renaissance. Another quasi-awakening. “Thanks infidels. Now you must die!”
Medieval Latin, Alchimista. One who practices alchimia.
English. Alchemist. Dropped the “al” in some words (chemistry), but kept it in the mystical branch of alchemy.
Let’s review. Alchemy literally means, "the black earth art." An alchemist is simply "one who practices the black earth art" The "black earth" (Khem), is also the root of the ancient name for Egypt itself: Kemet, "the black land."
So an alchemist, etymologically, is someone working with the dark, fertile, primordial matter, the soil from which things grow and into which things decompose. This is not accidental. The goal of alchemy, transmuting lead into gold, was always a metaphor for transforming the base self into the enlightened self, using the same dark, patient, earthy process that turns compost into soil and soil into grain.
So the original alchemists were farmers, or at least growers of grains. This would have seemed like magic and miracles back in its day, when it was brand new. Like writing.
As humanity “advanced” into the future, it would be legitimate to consider extracting metals from rock and making weapons, and stuff, as alchemy. Granted, second generation. Making iron from rock, or even fire from sand would fit the bill of, “miracles” or magic. Anybody could grow food, climate permitting. But to make things go boom! That’s some serious alchemy.
Then, humanity got carried away. Thought they could change base metals, with no exchange value, into gold. Along the way, they discovered “chemistry.” It should not surprise anyone that the Germans are the best chemists in the world. We will just leave that right here. And put a warning label on it.
The 21st century alchemist, doesn’t work with actual dirt, or metals, or chemicals. It’s all abstract. The magic is transmuting terror into survival, and countless other abstract formulas. Some of these cats don’t seem to get it. Yet. But they are genuinely trying.

Others, as there have always been, and always will be, are charlatans.
Here’s where we get to the Impostor part of the scenario. Our impostor fancies herself a fitness alchemist. Unfortunately our main character was sucked into one of these fly-by-night certification scams and she was taught the motions without the deeper elements of function, metabolism, connective tissue, Krebs cycle, and all that funky stuff.
This example runs parallel to Renaissance alchemists, that read the book. Ignorant of the symbolism within, they followed the spells to the letter. Bad move. Thus, many of them ended up frustrated, sick, imprisoned, or dead. Some executed by the crown for feeding the royal pet some supposed cure, that killed it.
Ooops. (That’s arf ful.)
We are witnesses, by way of social media, to something very similar. Only today the industry is a bit more savvy. They know they are frauds. Most of them anyway. The ones who know, know that there are no promises or guarantees to their mumbo-jumbo. What the public doesn’t know, is that the alchemy is on the individual. Same with fitness coaching. Maybe a healer can determine why you are in the kind of pain that you can’t explain to your mechanic.
“It’s making this funny kinda ‘squirching, boing-boing, brrratchunk’ kinda sound, and then, I just feel, y’know, kinda off. I can’t really explain it. And I just wanna cry all night long.”
You have demons! Everybody does. Most humans don’t call them demons, and even more don’t want to confront them. All kidding aside, this is a real thing. For countless reasons, many having to do with self-identity, or keeping that Impostor in tact, humans don’t want to disturb that facade. Less everything comes crashing down. But we’ve detoured once again.
Damn. It was a toll road too!
