Maid-chan no Anime: 3D Kanojo
3D Girls: they are worse in every respect than 2D girls, Maid-chan knows, but somehow most humans still prefer the smelly ones.
Not so Tsutsui Hikari, a long time otaku and sort of outcast in class. Until, that is, he meets Igarashi Iroha, a well known beauty. For reasons unknown to him Iroha suddenly asks him to go out with her.
Under shock and the impression that she is a girl who takes everyone, Tsutsui refuses, saying that even he has some pride. But in the end he agrees and the two form a couple.
This comes as a great shock to Hikari’s best friend Ito, too. Just the day before the two otakus have talked about how better 2D girls are and now that! And from all girls this beauty!
But Ito is a nice guy, who is happy for his friend. But Hikari, called Tsuntsun by Iroha, is not so happy. He has no idea why Iroha chose him and is constantly on watch for something bad. He is not a guy a girl like that would consider! He really is not!
That might sound like an inferior complex, and likely is, but even his friend Ito has to acknowledge the truth in it. And we are talking about someone who looks like that:
But then even for Ito spring comes, when he meets a girl from a lower class, Sumie Ayado. She likes the school garden. And anime. And is quite cute.
Love on first sight!
She has an inferior complex too, but Ito is used to that.
And there are more strange characters. Like Ishino Arisa. She is always on the hunt for a good looking boyfriend, and that may be the reason why she always gets disappointed by clinging herself to a boy who just exploits here.
After “Tsuntsun” helps here, she becomes a friend-of-sort of the strange otaku duo. Arisa often makes a grumpy face and talks down on the two, but inside she is not a bad person.
This is not only Maid-chan’s impression. Playboy Takanashi Mitsuya tries to snatch Iroha away from the totally unworthy otaku and gets a broadside into the face. After that he slowly warms up to the circle of strange people and even to the most annoying Arisa.
Conclusion
3D Kanojo is a bit of a disappointment. It is a school romance story, so of course the eyes are on the relationships. But those feel quite lukewarm to Maid-chan. First of all everything happens according to the standards of standards.
Five minutes after a character is introduced you know who hooks up with whom and on what basic change of heart.
Additionally to that, Maid-chan was not able to really feel with the characters. They just felt flat.
3D Kanojo even failed to use the premises of the story – otakudom and the half year promise of Iroha – for good effect.
No big feelings to feel, no comedy to save it, and a story that you can draw without watching more than one third of the series: there are a lot of anime that are more worth of your time. This anime is extremely mediocre in the bad sense.
All in all Maid-chan can give 3D Kanojo only 6/10 points on the totally objective Maid-chan scale.
