Homemade Cajun Seasoning Mix

in ART LOVERS6 years ago

The other day I was making some homemade pizza and Mr Golden D requested some flavored crust (which I have never done before) and asked him what flavor he wanted. He said Cajun; he likes spicy and hot foods. So I went online in search of a Cajun seasoning recipe that I could add to his crust.

I'm always looking for new seasoning mixes to add to my dry pantry and this is one that I don't have; and never considered, as I I don't really care for it too much. I like flavor in my food, but am not too fond of everything spicy.

After a few recipes I found, I settled on this one; with some changes made to meet our dietary requirements and omissions.

Now after making this seasoning mix, it got me thinking about other ones I can make; so I have added this search to my list of things to do in the near future and be able to add more to my dry pantry. I know he wanted this for his pizza crust, but I'm sure we'll be using the Cajun seasoning for other foods as well; especially since spring and summer will be here soon which means grilling and smoking season are approaching as well.

Recipe

  • 2-tablespoons paprika
  • 2-tablespoons garlic powder
  • 1-tablespoon onion powder
  • 1-tablespoon cayenne pepper powder
  • 2- teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1-teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1-tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1-teaspoon dried oregano

Mix all together and put in a shaker bottle.

I did tweak this a little- I cut the black pepper and kosher salt amounts in half for our recipe. It just seemed like a little too much sodium (considering his heart condition and all).

I am going to have to try this. My son likes spicy and hot, so it might work for him. I think the salt is a little much, he eats very little salt, I will cut it down some more and see how it does. Thanks!
