LAST REFUGE

“The last refuge of scoundrels is politics,”
So said Sir Desmond, as his nose he picks.
“Trying is the first step towards failure,”
“When office is won, they up their regalia.”
“Yes, they dress to a much higher standard,”
“A shame they don’t behave in a manner more candid.”
He was referring to the new Prime Minister,
A person with a reputation most sinister,
“I’ll lead the Party to victory in the next election.”
“Of course I’ll be the favoured selection.”

Of course the Party did badly slump,
Voters did not like the inestimable Mr Crump.
“Tax relief for all!” He did proclaim.
What he meant was tax benefits for the Rich, what a shame!
“And while we’re at it, our vigilance we’ll ne’er relax,”
“We’ll UP the Goods and Services Tax!”
Corruption, of course, is never too far.
“My! But he does drive an expensive car!
“Did he hire a helicopter to travel but five miles?”
“They do have panache, such quality styles.”
“Robbing from the People’s Purse?”
“Come on now, it could be worse!”
Hector Crump surely cut a fine figure,
When briefly walking up Parliament steps no-one would snigger.
The People’s Polly some, him, did call.
High enough now, to succumb to a great fall!
