"WHY DID THEY BUILD HUGE THEATERS IN ANCIENT TIMES"
First examples of theatre's origin are coming from Ancient Greek. But why people wanted to have theatre suddenly?
Actually, it did not appear suddenly, it wasn't the plan of the human, it was a plan of GODS...
Greek people had an economy which is based on agriculture and they really needed good harvest. So how they could have a good harvest? The answer is really easy. It is rain. They could have collapsed without rain, however, they didn't know about the water cycle. They had no knowledge of science, so when they can't understand something, it was all about their GODS. When they had no rain they were praying to Zeus. When they were fishing they needed good weather, when it is a storm and hard waves, they were praying to Poseidon.
But the main idea of praying was of course sacrifices. What about Harvest seasons, what they were doing? They were sacrificing ox, sheep, cows maybe most interesting one HUMAN for Dionysus.Human as a gift for God was popular. In some theaters, they put lions on stage. Because of this some theaters we can see a wall in front of seats to protect people from wild animals or Gladiators. Of course, people gathered for the most important ceremony. They started to build prototype of Theaters. ALTAR is a stone which people put the sacrifice on. All of the theaters you can see this stone. When Harvest time is started, god of wine and sex Dionysus who was born 2 times expects really good sacrifices. If you are not doing this next year harvest will be miserable. During sacrifices, people drank wine, had fun with music and shows.
CAVEA which is seats in Theaters started to build more and more. Word of "protocol" which means "sitting ass on the front" first time called Prohedria. After some generations theaters culture evolved. It was no more a deity it was more like fun. SKENE which is stage came out, as time passed it was raised up from the level of the orchestra, creating a proskenion, or "space in front of the skene"...
Adventure of Theatre started like this but it was just a beginning...
I just wanted to start to write about Daily life in Ancient Greek, If there will be people who would like to learn more and more I want to write.
PLEASE VOTE for RESPECT
