THE ART OF GLASS

Hello dear friends,
Today I'm writing something about the art of glass because I'm still in Tuscany, and my friend Natale is Master Glassmaker.
Natale always tells me a lot of interesting things about his work, and I' ve already seen him several times working, that's why I want to document a little bit this beautiful job.
The art of working with glass is a very broad theme, so I decided to divide it into two categories:
Glass as a necessity.
Glass as decoration.

Being an artist I have chosen to start with decoration: -))
In the first photo we can see some flowers created by simply letting the hot glass fall drop by drop, which is moulded with a gripper while it cools down. I have already tried it myself and I've not succeeded because it cools quickly and you have to be very quick to create. But if the glass is still hot and soft, it takes other unwanted shapes.
It also depends on the type of glass, for exemple green glass freezes before and is mainly used to increase production, but also to preserve better oil and wine.

Ciao cari amici,
oggi vi scrivo qualcosa sull’ arte del vetro perchè sono sempre ancora in Toscana, e il mio amico Natale è Maestro vetraio.
Natale mi racconta sempre tante cose interessanti sul suo lavoro, e l’ho già visto più volte all’opera, ecco perchè voglio documentare un poco questo bellissimo mestiere.
L’arte di lavorare il vetro é un tema molto vasto , così ho deciso di suddividerlo in due categorie :

• Il vetro come necessità.
• Il vetro come decorazione.

Siccome sono un’artista ho scelto di iniziare dalla decorazione :-))
Nella prima foto possiamo vedere dei fiori creati semplicemente lasciando cascare a goccia il vetro caldo, che viene modellato con una pinza mentre si raffredda. Ho già provato anch'io e non ci sono riuscita, perchè si raffredda rapidamente e bisogna essere velocissimi a creare. Invece se il vetro è ancora tanto caldo e molle prende altre forme non volute.
La velocità di raffreddamento dipende anche dal tipo del vetro , p.es il vetro verde si ghiaccia prima e viene utilizzato sopratutto per aumentare la produzione, ma anche perchè si mantengano meglio olio e vino.

There are many techniques and many types of glass.
The type of glass depends on the composition: we have crystal, mirror, glass with color pigments, etc..
Also the techniques are different, there are different ways of painting it, and you need to know how to cut it and match it.
A master glassmaker was considered as an army officer, he had the sword and place reserved for theatre.
We arrive at the second part of my post!
In addition to the decorations, very useful things were created, which often we cannot find today, such as the ice ampoule, which is used to freeze drinks: on one side there was the place to put the drink inside and on the other side the ice.

A parte il vetro soffiato vi sono ancora molte altre tecniche e molti tipi di vetro.
Il tipo di vetro cambia in base alla composizione : abbiamo il cristallo, lo specchio, il vetro con pigmenti di colore, ecc.
Anche le tecniche sono diverse, vi sono diversi modi di dipingerlo, e bisogna sapere come tagliarlo e abbinarlo.
Un maestro vetraio era considerato al pari di un ufficiale dell’esercito, aveva lo spadino e il posto riservato a teatro .
Arriviamo alla seconda parte del mio post!
Oltre alle decorazioni venivano create cose veramente utili, che spesso al giorno d’oggi non si trovano piú, p.es l’ampolla del ghiaccio, che serve a ghiacciare le bevande : da una parte andava messa la bibita e dall’altra il ghiaccio

Poi c’era la gemella , anche chiamata suocera e nuora perchè si danno le spalle, che sono due contenitori in uno, e serviva a metterci l’olio e l’aceto.

On the ships they had a glass barometer, which was stuck on the roof and filled in half of the water: when the weather worsened, the pressure increased on the liquid that escaped, indicating the change.

Sulle navi avevano il barometro di vetro, che veniva attaccato sul tetto e riempito a metà d‘ acqua: quando il tempo peggiorava aumentava la pressione sul liquido il quale fuoriusciva, indicando il cambiamento.

The glass was even used to make a drinkvessel for the birds, this was fixed outside the cage and the whole part was where he drank.

Addirittura si usava il vetro per fare il beverello agli uccellini, questo era fissato all‘ esterno della gabbia e all’intero andava la parte dove beveva.

The flasks were covered with a very malleable plant, which served as a protection and was bleached with sulfur to be more beautyful

I fiaschi veniveno rivestiti con la sala, una pianta adatta allo scopo essendo molto malleabile, che faceva da protezione e veniva sbiancata con lo zolfo per questione di bellezza.

And I even managed to find an almost one hundred years old price list , here is it.

E sono persino riuscita a trovare un vecchio listino prezzi di quasi cent'anni fa, eccolo.

There are certainly still countless things to say on this subject, but I have only used the material I found at Natales house: -))).

Ci sono sicuramente ancora infinite cose da dire su questo argomento, ma io ho utilizzato soltanto il materiale che ho trovato in casa di Natale :-))))
