Endemic to Mindanao
- Vanda Sanderiana Orchids 🔸 Locally known as "Waling Waling" is endemic to Mindanao. These tropical beautiful flowers have always been the symbol of Mindanao and most especially Davao City. These flowers come in pink, purple and white. Flowers are always cheerful, beautiful and a powerful aesthetic to anything. 🔸 In this piece, they represent, culture, beauty and the value of Mindanaoan way of life.
- The Models 🔸Pamela is wearing ethnic attire representing the Mandaya tribe. Mindanao has always been known as the island filled with ethnic tribes or the lumad people.
These are indigenous people who live out the culture, the roots and carry the story and beauty of our land. - 🔸 Jessel on the other hand is wearing a Filipiñana woven like an abanico. The posing is very calm and peaceful, it represents the humble Filipino people or women. 🔸 Her leaning posture also indicates confidence and a feeling of being resided towards something. That is what is represented in the Artwork.
(c) Creating the Draft
The following pictures are the planning stage of what is expected.
- The initial plan is to draw the subject with the original clothing. However, the Mandaya attire is more colorful and appealing and expresses the culture more, hence the changes.
(d) Medium and Materials
The selected Medium for this artwork is - OIL PASTELS ON FELT PAPER
Oil pastels: Sakura Cray-pas
Dark Blue Felt Paper
Efficiency of Oil Pastels
Oil pastels can be as professional as any other medium when made well. These are wax and oil based so they do not fully dry out although rest assured that the application on the surface of your paper or canvas is faster, easier and does not require much of the pastel stick. With oil pastels you can replicate the effect of paint without having to buy much more expensive materials and blending even with your hand is easy and can be done with a few strokes.
Advantage of Felt paper
Felt paper is not a common surface to use, not many know it but compared to paper, felt paper absorbs the oil or helps dry out the wax from the pastels so (1) it is less messy, (2)the oil pastels stick to the surface faster and does not build up, the pastel stick has a longer life span because you are saving it and (3) The delicate and cloth like effect of the felt paper serves as an automatic midtone, or background and it looks very professional.
III. Execution
(a) Techniques
How does one blend with oil pastels? Oil Pastels are soft and easy to blend. The basic technique here is:
- start with the mid tone: drawing pink flowers would mean starting with pink as a mid tone, then adding red and purple for shadow and adding white for highlights and other accent colors.
- layering: layer the tones and when done smudge gently until smooth. Add colors and shadows and smudge again to blend it.
(b) Process Documentation: Oil Pastels on Felt Paper - Ugnayan Art Exhibit, Mindanao, Philippines
Process Photos:
Starting out:
- Using white pastel first before putting the mid tone helps make colors more opaque
- Layer normally afterwards
During creation:
- Consider advise from fellow artists
- Be open to changes
- Be careful of proportions and stay away from messy blending
Consider the elements of art and principles od design and incorporate them.

Analysis
Color the colors are warm against the cool colored background. The scheme also represents a very feminine touch to it.
Emphasis the main subject is emphasized through the darkness and emptiness of the background also, the colors pop out due to the contrasting of the pastels. This also creates asymmetrical balance
Rhythm is by the repetition of flowers through out the paper.
Movement is the flow created by the arrangements of the flower.
IV. Choosing a frame
Lastly once finished, the art needs to be inside a frame for the exhibit.
There were many options such as black and white, green, blue, red and gold etc.
This is the result of the chosen frame and matting:
- Reddish brown frame with a gold lining - the design is wooden but it is made od polystyrine.
- Gold matting
- A pastel pink secondary matting
This color scheme is warm similar to the colors used for the subject.
This will also help emphasize the blue background.
The colors are even more emphasized and in total, very good outcome.
Finished!
I am very satisfied of the outcome! Happy!
