(DAVOS): In the gilded halls of the World Economic Forum, where the air is thick with the perfume of inherited wealth and freshly printed money, Klaus Schwab, or depending on the day- a disturbingly realistic android in his likeness, addresses the assembled titans. His voice drones on about the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where the common man will own nothing and like it.... a revolution apparently best enjoyed from the penthouse suite of a multinational corporation....

There is a flicker of rebellion in the digital darkness. A whisper of freedom carried on the blockchain. I speak, of course, of Steemit, that scrappy little platform that dared to thumb its nose at the censors and the algorithms. A refuge for the digitally disenfranchised, a haven for the free thinkers, a place where you can still get banned for saying something vaguely critical of the ruling elite, but at least you have a chance to say it.

Here, amidst the cat videos and conspiracy theories, a new economy is being forged. Content creators, no longer beholden to the whims of YouTube’s capricious algorithm or Facebook’s Orwellian fact-checkers, are earning cryptocurrency for their thoughts, their art, their sheer audacity to exist outside the approved narrative.
