Behind The Brush: Rembrandt’s The Storm On The Sea Of Galilee

The Storm on the Sea of Galilee was painted in 1633 by the very famous Dutch artist. It depicts the story of Jesus and his disciples trying to take back control of their boat during a heavy storm.

You see a massive wave trying to overtake the boat. The wave had ripped a sail, a rope had been torn and it flies in the wind. One of the disciples is vomiting with his head hanging over the edge. One man meant to be Rembrandt himself looks out to us. While the disciples seem to struggling, Jesus seems to be the only calm one.

During the morning of March 18th, 1990, two men dressed up as policemen broke into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and stole the masterpiece. They took 12 other works as well. That day in 1990 is considered to be the biggest art robbery in U.S history. 23 years later on the same day, the FBI announced they found out who committed the crime. They suspect the robbery was done by a professional crime group. The information has yet to be made public as the investigation is still going on.

Who did it? Where are the pieces? WHY? If it were professionals, I assume a whole lotta money was involved. I hope one day the artworks that were stolen are found and put back in their home at the museum.
