VIDEO: "Pier Light West" - A Gouache Painting

 

"Pier Light West"

This painting depicts the western pier light at the entrance to the German Port of Warnemuende (Rostock) on the Baltic Sea. The green signal on starbord indicates the boat is returning to the harbor. On the portside the captain would see a red signal.

Americans may find this confusing, as they might have heard the phrase "red, right, return", i.e. the colors there are reversed. On the U.S. coast boaters must keep the red signals on starbord to get home.

This painting is based on a photo post by our friend @fotogruppemunich from last year. You can follow the development of my painting by watching the short morphing video. For those in a hurry photos of the individual steps are attached below.

 
Dieses Gemälde stellt das westliche Molenfeuer an der Einfahrt zum Hafen Warnemünde (Rostock) dar. Das grüne Signal an Steuerbord zeigt an, dass das Schiff in den Hafen zurückkehrt. Auf der Backbordseite würde der Kapitän ein rotes Signal sehen.

Für Amerikaner dürfte dies ziemlich verwirrend sein, da sie sich nach dem Merksatz "red, right, return" (rot, rechts, zurück) richten, d.h. die Farben dort sind vertauscht. An der US-Küste müssen Bootsführer die roten Signale an Steuerbord halten, um nach Hause zu gelangen.
