Solitude (Art Explained by a Writer: De Sterrennacht (1889)

Solitude, that has made
your home
in my side,
since the blush of night.

Solitude, that returns
like a tide,
sweeping away my wheat,
the green,
the embers of the walls.

Sounds that I love,
I recognize them.
Let them be part of the skin
that inhabits me,
like a vine,
climbing up the column.

Oil paint gives me life.
Not only the cold,
the faint light,
the scent of what I paint.

Among threads I leave you a clue,
a passage
where no one can reach.
We will leave messages:

small pebbles
that life abandons
in the middle of nowhere.

We are more than bones,
more than dust.
Two points
in distant latitudes,
using brushes,
trying to understand
all that is absurd,
the human,
trying to transcend,
to touch the divine
without burning our wings.

Can the white be replaced or simply be the unpainted canvas like they use to paint watercolour?

Better close the wings, fold them into small pebbles, before you will be abandoned and live the luxury life of painting day and nightthank you for your dedicated work of art.
