Domestic violence; why do some men beat their wives?

I shudder at the thought of a man lifting his hands on me. I don't pray to experience such especially not in marriage. I've witnessed men beat up their wives. My neighbor practically beats his wife ones in a while.

I can't help but wonder why. Pls what makes some men beat their wives?

Is there a way to avoid domestic violence on the part of the woman?
