Map the Story #16 - Southside Farmers Market, Canberra
There are no street markets in Australia, so if you find a street vegetable market in Canberra, it's a rare place.
It happens on Sundays just outside Canberra College. I think the farmers take full advantage of this space, which is close to a big mall and the prestigious college in the middle of Canberra City.
I sometimes buy fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits such as apples, tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, and bakery items, which come from locals settled in Australia coming from different countries.
This market provides an opportunity to buy fresh vegetables in the Southside Farmers Market every Sunday from 7 am to 11:30 am.
This market offers a variety of regional and local produce, including fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits, along with other local products like artisan breads, eggs, seafood, and baked goods.
It's really fun watching fresh products coming directly from farms and sold by farmers that produce them. So if you want to buy anything fresh, including fresh beef, fresh free-range pork, chicken, or eggs, this is the place.
Not only fresh farm products, but you can also buy herbs, oils, chutneys, sauces, plants, and even food for your pets. Yes, leashed dogs are allowed but not near the food stalls.
And not only these, but you can buy many more items like handmade gifts. I visit this market often during my walks, as it's just 900 meters away from home at the other of the park, and enjoy spending 20-30 minutes and buying a few essential items. Yes, I was here last Sunday at this local market.
I must admit such markets are common back home but rare in Australia. So if any of you ever visit Canberra and are looking for fruits and vegetables at a fair price, this is the place.
You can sit here and have your breakfast, which is a favorite pastime of Australians, as they never miss a chance of eating outside.
If you are looking for smoked trout, fresh pasta, smoked meats, salami, spices, and dried fruits, it's the right place. You can get them on different stalls.
The markets are open on Sundays for four and a half hours in the morning so you can see people come here to take a walk as well for a breakfast at the stalls inside the market even if they have to sit on steps which is perfectly fine for working Australians.
I saw a beautiful stall that sells plants and flowers.
If you are interested in tasting baked items from different countries, like cakes, biscuits, pastries, and breads, it's the right place for you.
As I said my home is just 900 meters away so I am walking back to my house out of the gate as it's already 10.30 am and sunny after a long time so the shadows were lengthening.
