Chilai Kalan Begins with Much-Needed Precipitation in Kashmir

On 21st December every year, a 40-day-long period of severe cold begins here in the Valley of Kashmir. This period is known as Chilai Kalan, and it is considered the harshest phase of winter. During this time, temperatures drop sharply, making life extremely difficult. Almost the entire valley comes to a standstill, and most developmental works carried out in the open are halted.

This year, Chilai Kalan has begun with precipitation, something we had been waiting for desperately. The year has largely remained dry across the valley, and people were hoping for precipitation right from the onset of winter. However, we had to wait for nearly one and a half months since the beginning of November before it finally arrived. Now, precipitation has eventually started. The forecast predicts rain for the next two days, while the higher reaches are expected to receive snowfall. This will help replenish glaciers, which serve as a vital source of freshwater for streams throughout the year.

As most people here are involved in agriculture, precipitation was urgently needed. The soil had very little moisture left for trees to absorb, and if the dry spell had continued, it could have turned disastrous. No doubt, precipitation also brings certain challenges. Roads become slippery, making movement difficult for both vehicles and pedestrians. However, these are minor issues compared to the economic and agricultural losses caused by prolonged dryness.

This phase of winter is different from the rest, as it brings a complete change in lifestyle. People prefer staying indoors and avoid unnecessary movement outside due to the intense cold, which can have serious health impacts. Nevertheless, the precipitation has arrived with a sense of positivity. Until now, many people were suffering from dry air and related health issues, but this will bring some relief.

This year, Chilai Kalan has arrived as a blessing, and we must remain grateful to the Almighty, who always has better plans for us.

Thank you for going through my post. Have a great time ahead.
