The Hidden Cost of Apple Farming in Kashmir

Spraying pesticide on fruits, or more precisely on apple trees here in the valley of Kashmir, is never easy. It comes with several health hazards that have actually made life difficult here. Despite being so natural and closely connected to nature, the valley, in reality, faces serious challenges. Horticulture, being one of the prime sectors here, needs protection from pests, which requires the use of a large number of pesticides—around 10 to 15 sprays throughout the year.

This has not only deteriorated the natural environment of the valley—its flora, streams, soil, and other components—but has also had a deep and lasting impact on human lives. A few years ago, the use of pesticides was not this extensive, and people seemed much healthier. Now, however, many people are affected by these chemicals, and a significant number can be seen in hospitals suffering from diseases that are believed to be caused by such exposure.

A recent study has presented a shocking statement that more than 30 cancer cases are reported every day, which is quite concerning for everyone living here. While we may be earning from the horticulture sector, we are paying for it with our lives. Unfortunately, people do not seem very concerned and are not taking necessary precautions to protect themselves by using proper safety gear.

People tend to ignore protective equipment, partly because it is expensive compared to the income generated from this sector, and also because it is uncomfortable to wear during spraying. However, this is a serious issue, and people need to take it seriously. The impact is already significant, and over time, it is only going to increase, potentially turning into a disaster for the valley.

Unfortunately, the demand for pesticides has increased due to the introduction of imported apple varieties, which have brought new diseases. This has resulted in increased pesticide usage throughout the year. Earlier, 2–3 sprays were sufficient, and the crops remained healthy, but now even 15 sprays are often not enough.

I am sharing this concern so that I can get some useful suggestions to stay healthy in such an environment. I know I can connect with people from across the world who may have valuable experience in this field, and I would truly appreciate their suggestions. Thank you.
