Why Do We Have Fingerprints?

But why do humans have them?

Fingerprints may also help our sense of touch. The skin on our fingertips contains many nerve endings, allowing us to detect texture, pressure, vibration, and other details. The unique surface structure of the fingers works together with these sensory systems.
Another interesting feature is that fingerprints usually remain relatively stable throughout life. As a person grows, the fingers become larger, but the basic ridge patterns generally stay the same. A cut or injury that does not reach deeply into the skin may heal without permanently changing the underlying pattern.
This stability is one reason fingerprints became useful for identification.
For a long time, people used fingerprints on paper documents and official records. Today, digital fingerprint scanners can recognize patterns electronically. Smartphones, security systems, and other devices may use fingerprint recognition to verify someone's identity.
However, fingerprints are not completely magical or impossible to copy. Modern security systems use additional technologies and safeguards because no single identification method is perfect.
Fingerprints can also leave tiny marks on objects when we touch them. These marks may sometimes be visible and sometimes require special techniques to detect.
Interestingly, the patterns on our fingers are not simply random lines. They generally fall into broad pattern types such as loops, whorls, and arches, although every person's detailed pattern is highly individual.
Our fingerprints are a great example of how a small feature of the human body can have several different functions. They help us interact with objects, contribute to our sense of touch, and provide a convenient biological identifier.
Most of the time, we never think about them. We use our fingers to open doors, hold phones, write, eat, work, and perform countless small tasks throughout the day.
Yet those tiny ridges have been with us since before we were born.
