A Flooded Day: My Experience at Masjid Al-Mabrur

Aceh has been hit by severe flooding this week, including my city, Lhokseumawe. Rain has been pouring almost non-stop, and many places are underwater. One of them is Masjid Al-Mabrur in Gampong Meunasah Mesjid.
This afternoon, I rode through a flooded road heading to Masjid Al-Mabrur. The rain had been pouring non-stop, and water was rising quickly. I kept pushing my white Mio forward, hoping it would make it through, until suddenly:
Bhuuukk!

I parked the motorcycle by the roadside

The engine died right in the middle of the flood.
I parked the motorcycle by the roadside, rolled my pants up, and continued walking slowly through the muddy water. Every step felt heavier as the road turned into a river. When the mosque finally came into view, my heart sank, its courtyard was completely submerged.

When I arrived at the mosque, the courtyard was no longer a place where people walk with clean shoes, it had turned into a wide brown lake. Water had risen up to the first floor, and the entrance was submerged. I had to carefully step my way to the stairs, feeling the cold floodwater around me.

The first floor was no longer a place for worshippers, it had become a brown lake, with water reaching up the stairway. I waded my way to the ablution area, then climbed the stairs to the second floor because the ground level was unusable.
I walked slowly through the floodwater toward the ablution area, carefully stepping so I wouldn’t slip.

Inside the first floor

Inside, the atmosphere was different. The usual calm of the mosque was mixed with a sense of struggle and patience. I saw rolled-up mats, still wet, showing traces of muddy water.

Even upstairs, the floor was wet from the rain blowing in. I found a mat, unrolled it, and prepared a small dry space. The mosque was quiet, no other worshippers around, only the distant laughter of children outside.

Some boys were playing football

Some were swimming joyfully in the floodwater, turning the mosque courtyard into a giant pool. Others were playing football near the entrance, playing football in the rain like nothing was wrong.

Despite the condition, the mosque stood strong. Its large dome and wide prayer hall reminded me that no matter what happens, this place always becomes a shelter, not only from the rain, but also from the worries of life.

And after finishing, I didn’t stay long. I headed straight back home, grateful for the chance to pray despite the situation, and hoping the flood would soon recede.
