'수제맥주' - 최근 한국의 문화동향을 설명할 수 있는 중요한 단어 중 하나입니다. 대량생산되는, 홉과 몰트의 맛이 미약하고 마치 '물같은' 미국식 부가물 라거에 대한 반동으로 시작된 수제맥주 Boom은 많은 이를 맥주의 세계에 빠져들게 했습니다. 어떤 이는 (저 같은) 소비자로, 어떤 이는 집에서 양조(homebrewing)을 하기도 했죠. 그리고 어떤 이는 가게를 직접 차려 사람들에게 맥주 문화를 소개하는 장소를 만들었습니다. 바로 이태원에, "사계(四界)"라는 이름을 지닌 곳을 말입니다.
"Craft Beer" - a one of important keywords which can describe recent trends of S. Korea's culture. This phenomena was triggered by kinda 'revolt' which aspired from resent or frustration toward mass-produced and 'waterly' adjucnt lager beer, which lacks ample flavor of hops and malts. Some of them became enthusiastic consumers like me, and some did home-brewing. And finally, some chose to open places for introducing various beer culture to public. The name of the very place? It's rather poetic. "Craft Pub : Four Seasons", at Itaewon, Seoul.

이태원에 많고 많은 맥주집이 있지만, 이 곳 사계는 이른바 "맥덕의 성지"라는 특별한 별칭을 가지고 있습니다. 2013년 11월, 국내맥주 정보 사이트인 "비어포럼(BeerForum)"에서 만난 맥덕 5명이 의기투합하여 이태원 지하철역 부근에 문을 열었습니다. 이것이 바로 사계의 시작입니다. 맥덕을 위한 아지트 겸 놀이터를 만들자는 의도였습니다. 그래서 그런지 이들이 보이는 행보는 상업적이라기보다는, 그야말로 맥주 그 자체를 순수하게 사랑하는 이들의 '실험실'이나 '사랑방'과 같은 역할을 담당해왔습니다.
Lots of pubs are boasting their charms in Itaewon, but this place "Four Seasons" is special ; it is specially dubbed as "The Sanctuary of Beergeeks". In Nov, 2013, five beergeeks who came to know each other on "Beerforum" website, they were all like-minded and decided to open pub near Itaewon Metro Station and this is the very start of "Four Seasons". This place takes on not 'mercantile', but rather seems to be lab or Salon for beergeeks.
대체 무엇이 이 장소를 특별하게 했냐구요? 바로 이들이 자가(自家)양조를 하기 때문입니다. 언제나 '실험적'인 맥주를, 대중적이거나 인기많은 종류는 쉽게 양조하지 않았어요. 예를 들면, 최초의 '세종(Saison)' 방식 맥주를 상업양조한 곳이 바로 사계입니다 (물론, 이거 팔아서 돈은 많이 못 벌었어요!). 물론 다른 펍에서도 양조는 합니다만, 보통은 IPA나 음용성이 좋은 것들 위주로 하기에 사계의 시도는 늘 맥덕들에게 많은 주목을 받았고 물론 그 기대에 충실히 부응했습니다.
What on earth makes this place special? 1st, It's due to its distinct types of beers they brew for themselves. They always brewed 'experimental' beers, not popular ones. For instance they first brewed Saison style beer 'commercially' (of course as I know, they didn't make a fortune by selling this item ^^;;).
Of course other pubs also brew themselves or through contract, but their trial is worthy noticing because at that time other craft brewers didn't focus on relatively less consumed type of beers. Most of were like IPA or other drinkable ones. So their trial always attracted interests of beergeeks in S. Korea and lived up to expectation from them successfully.
2번째로, 맥주의 이름이 특별합니다. 맥주 자체가 서양에서 발생하고 발전된 것이기에, 영어나 프랑스어, 독일어과 같은 서양식 이름이 맥주에 붙는 건 아주 자연스럽죠. 그러나 사계에서 나온 모든 맥주는 목가적이고 순우리말 이름을 가집니다. 예를 들면 "들꽃", "참숯", "새벽", "소나기" 등. 제 생각에, 이러한 '현지화' 전략은 맥주를 보다 친숙하게 하는 효과를 가집니다. 그리고 이름만 봐도 맥주가 어떤 스타일인지 대강 알 수 있기도 합니다. 예를 들어 "꽃" 이름이 붙은 것들은 보다 산뜻하고 은은한 향이 나는 식이죠.
2nd, its name is special. Beer itself was derived and developed usually in Western, so it was natural(?) to put names on beers in western languages such as English, French or Germany. But you know, usually these langs are difficult to recognize and pronounce for people of east. Here we can see most distinguishable features of their beers : ALL BEERS HAVE KOREAN and idyllic NAME. For example : "Wildflower", "Charcoal", "Dawn", "Shower".....
In my opinion, this kinda of 'localization' strategy worked so well with making beers more familiar to public. And its name so suited each style of beers so people can understand characters of beers without knowing terminology. For example, beers with flower name will take on more floral and aromatic scent. At least this way appealed to me. Beer with my mother tongue! Isn't it charming?
그러나 한국 크래프트 맥주를 찾는 이가 적어서였을까요? 아니면 높아만 가는 임대료를 감당하기 어려웠을까요? 2017년 7월 9일, 사계는 마지막 케그(Keg)를 소진하며 약 4년에 이르는 그 대장정을 마치고 폐업하게 됩니다. 폐업 전에 마지막으로 들렀는데, 참 기분이 묘했습니다. 그 공간에는 돈이 없어 쩔쩔매던 (지금도 마찬가지이나) 예전의 저와, 그 곳에서 만난 수많은 친구들과 맥덕들, 그리고 제 시간이 묻어있었기 때문입니다. 이 공간이 사라지는 건 제 기억을 재구성할 하나의 열쇠가 사라짐을 의미하기 때문이겠지요. 그래서 맛난 맥주를 폐업맞이로 싸게 먹으면서도, 마음이 영 편하지 않았습니다. 그러나 맥덕들은 시종일관 유쾌했습니다! ^_^
But due to several unknown reasons - maybe low popularity for craft beers in Korea, or soaring rental fees in Itaewon - Four Seasons decided to close its shops on 9th, July, 2017 after exhausting last keg of beers with 3. 5 yrs of services. So I visited this pub at last, and it made me feel a little bit mixed. There I saw myself with little money for paying beers, met many friends and beergeeks. But the saddest things is, by loss of this place, I lost one of my keys to recollect my past memories. So I wasn't at ease with cheap beers on clearance. BUT BEERGEEKS WERE AMICABLE ALL THE TIMES! - 비록 사계는 사라지나, 그곳에 쏟았던 그들의 땀과 노력은 한국 크래프트 맥주의 성장을 가져왔음을 늘 기억하고자 합니다. 그간 고마웠어요, 사계! Though Four Seasons is gone, I firmly believe their efforts and sweats contributed to expanding and growing scenes of Korea craft beers. THANKS, FOUR SEASONS!
우와 이태원에 이런곳이 있는지 몰랏네요ㅠㅜ 폐업한다니 아쉬워요... 저두 맥주조아하는데 진작알앗더라면...ㅜㅜ
맥덕 사이에서는 유명한데, 아무래도 그렇지 않은 분들에게는 조금 생소한 곳이긴 했습니다. 이렇게 되니 더 아쉽네요 폐업한 게 ㅠㅠ 다른 곳 많으니 거기라도 꼭 가주세요!

헉 맥덕과 일반인 사이에 있는듯한 저도 꼭 한번 가보고 싶었던 곳인데 미루고 미뤘더니 가볼 수 없게 되었네요. 슬픕니다.
이제 저 전용잔도 볼 수가 없게 되었어요 :( ㅜㅜ

20리터씩만들어서 친구랑 갈라먹고.
