Beer Review - Rogue Ales Cold Brew IPA

Yes, you are reading correctly, this is the second straight IPA I have drank, actually both consumed in the same day. This review is a day late. This is from Rogue Ales, an Oregon brewery that I have actually visited last summer. This IPA is infused with coffee though, which means it has a shot at being approved by me, an avowed IPA disliker (is that even a word?). Lets check it out!

  • Alcohol Content: 7.5% by volume

  • Company Description: Rogue Cold Brew IPA is a hoppy IPA infused with 200 gallons of Stumptown Coffee Roasters’ famous Cold Brew Coffee in every batch. Brewed to awaken all your senses, Cold Brew IPA opens with a huge hit of coffee aroma that is balanced by a not-so-subtle hop punch. This beer is certain to perk you up! The Can
This beer came in a 12 oz aluminum can, and is also available in 22 oz bottles and on tap. The can is mostly green with the Rogue logo name across the front in large letters, picture of a hop and some coffee beans front and center in brown, white and black colors with beer name on the bottom. The other side of the can has the description from above along with the standard warnings, etc. This is the first Rogue Ale product I have had in a can, i believe, cans are a recent addition to Rogues lineup, having been mostly bottles prior to this. I have mostly had Rogue beers in 22 oz bottles in the past. Rogue has a very nice webpage, so check it out if you get the chance.

The Beer

  • Appearance: A dark copper, brownish color, with almost no foam head (I found that odd) and what little you see in the picture disappeared rapidly.
  • Aroma: Had a slight hoppy aroma but more coffee, although it was not overwhelming.
  • Taste/Mouthfeel: The feel was smooth but bitter with some carbonation, Not overly hoppy to my taste buds. The coffee taste dominates but it wasn't a strong coffee taste compared to some coffee beers I have had. The coffee taste did seem to mute the hoppiness of the IPA, which was a blessing to me.
  • Drinkability: A very drinkable beer, not overly bitter and not overly hoppy. At 7.5% abv though, watch yourself.

<h2<Rating and Final Thoughts
I gave this a 3.75 on Untappd, another IPA above the norm for me. It got an average 3.40 from5 friend ratings and overall on Untappd, it received a 3.75 from57k raters. So I was pretty much in tune with the other thousands who have tried and rated it. I like coffee beers, and this being an IPA didn't deter me from trying it. I liked it, mostly due to the coffee taste muting the IPA hoppiness.

3.75/5.0

Don't be surprised to see this beer in next weeks #beersaturday. If you get a chance to head over there and give me an upvote to help my chances of winning some SBD that would be awesome. Cheers!
