About Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1810. She taught in India for 17 years, before dedicating her life to caring for the sick and the poor in 1946. She established nursing homes, centers for the blind, the elderly, the disabled, and a leprosy colony through the charity missionaries.In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize; as a result of her humanitarian work.She died in September 1997, and was surnamed in October 2003, and in September 2016, Father Frances Francis gave her the title of Theresa, the saints of Calcutta. 

 

The beginnings of Mother Teresa

The Catholic nun Theresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, the present capital of the Republic of Macedonia. The next day, she was baptized as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Her father, Nikola Nikola and Dranafile Bojaxhiu, were descended from Albanian origins. Her father was a businessman, a construction contractor and a dealer for medicines and other goods. Her family was a religious Catholic, her father Nicola was an active participant in the church and local politics, and a supporter of Albania's independence.In 1919, when Agnes was only eight years old, her father suddenly fell ill and died. While the cause of his death is still unknown, many predictions that his political enemies have killed him with poison. After her father died, Agnes was deeply concerned with her mother, who was a religious and compassionate woman, and instilled in her daughter a deep commitment to charity.Despite being rich, only her mother Dora Bujaxio was invited open to the city's poor to eat with her family. She advised her daughter and told her: "Petite, do not eat a bite of food unless you share it with others." When Agnes asked, "Who are the people who eat with us?" Her mother always answered: "Some of them are our relatives, others are our people."

The achievements of Mother Teresa

Agnes joined an elementary school affiliated with the convent, and then in secondary school she joined a state-run school. During her childhood, she sang with the local Sacred Heart Band and was sometimes asked for individual performance. At the age of 12 and during her annual pilgrimage to the Church of the Black Madonna in Vitina, Kosovo, Agnes felt her desire to dedicate her life to the service of the Church.Six years later, in 1928, Agnes, then eighteen, decided to become a nun and traveled to Ireland to join the Loretto sisters at the Blessed Virgin Mary Institute in Dublin. There she got the title "Sister Mary Teresa" according to Saint Therese of Lisieux.A year later, Sister Marie Teresa traveled to Darjeeling, India, to learn monasticism. She was then sent to Calcutta, where she was assigned the teaching of St. Mary's Secondary School for Girls, a school run by sisters Loreto and dedicated to educating girls from the poorest Bengali families in the city. Sister Teresa learned Bengali and Hindi fluently while studying history and geography and dedicated herself to poverty alleviation for girls through education.On May 24, 1937, the last covenant was made to commit itself to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience. As was the case with the nuns of Loretto, she was given the title "Mother" after taking the last covenant, and then known as "Mother Teresa". Mother Teresa continued teaching at St. Mary's school, and in 1944 she became principal.On September 10, 1946, the decision was made to leave teaching and was forced to work in poor neighborhoods of Kolkata; to help the poorest and sick people there.But she could not leave her position in the monastery without official permission; for she had made a covenant of obedience. Almost a year and a half later, she finally got her approval in January 1948. In August of that year, she left the Loreto convent and began to wander around the city wearing the blue and white sari that she wore throughout her life. After six months of training in basic medicine, she began her first trip to the poor neighborhoods of Kolkata. She had only one goal: "to help the untouchables, the hated, and the one who does not care about them."Mother Teresa began taking effective steps to help the city's poor. She set up an open-air school and a shelter for the destitute poor in an abandoned building, which she persuaded the city administration to donate to her charity projects. In October 1950, the "Missionary Charitable Society" was established with the participation of several female members, most of them former teachers or students at St. Mary's School.With the increasing flow of donations from across India and the world, Mother Teresa has expanded her charity goals. During the 1950s and 1960s, a leprosy colony, an orphanage, a nursery, a family clinic and a series of mobile health clinics were established.In 1971, Mother Teresa traveled to New York City to open her first charity home in America. In the summer of 1982, she traveled secretly to Beirut, Lebanon, where she helped Christian and Muslim children during the war. While she was there, Dara opened an AIDS care center.In February 1965, Pope Paul VI granted the Society of Charity Missions permission to expand and spread globally, not only in India. Death of Mother Teresa
