Talking Bitcoin to Cambodia's Fintech Titans

in #bitcoin7 years ago

Hello Steemit, my name is Steve and I am the sole proprietor of a Bitcoin startup in Cambodia called CryptoAsia.

Last month I was invited to do a presentation on Bitcoin at a FinTech conference at the Sofitel hotel in Phnom Penh. I was one of 6 speakers and the only one to discuss Bitcoin.

The panel included the proprietor of Wing and the CEO of PiPay, two of the biggest mobile money platforms in Cambodia.

The event lasted over 4 hours. I was asked to fill a 10 minutes slot at the end before the panel discussion. I channeled my best Andreas M. Antonopoulos impersonation and it went very well. Andreas would've been proud.

Amusingly, I blanked in the middle of the talk and had to get my notes out of my pocket. But later I was told everyone thought I did it for dramatic effect. Ha!

It's a struggle working alone in Cambodia. I am self-funded and unstaffed, outsourcing work when necessary. So I didn't have any obvious choices for help at the event.

Fortunately, at the last minute I was joined by a friend who could assist with demonstrating our products while speaking intelligently on the topic of Bitcoin. He was a big help and, as it turned out, knew a lot of the people in attendance. Thank you Rithy.

The audience was full of journalists, bankers, FinTech insiders and anyone else with $125 to spend on a conference ticket. There were at least 100 people there.

I am very thankful to the organizers for giving me a platform to discuss Bitcoin in Cambodia.

They actually gave me a table where I could set up computers to demonstrate real-time Bitcoin transactions using our Bitcoin payment gateway (powered by the incomparable Mycelium Gear).

This event was exactly what I needed to gain a little publicity. I landed several interviews afterwards including Cambodia Sin Chew Daily and the Phnom Penh Post.

I've got lots of things to say but not always the inclination to say them. I hope to be posting more about my adventures in entrepreneurship in Cambodia for the Steemit community.

Thanks for reading. Look me up on your next trip to Phnom Penh. We hold regular Meetups. The next one is tonight!
