NiceHash Crypto-Mining Exchange Hacked with over $70 million in Bitcoin stolen
Bitcoin has jumped 20% last week and has jumped again around 20% this week finally crossing the $15,000 threshold.
Earlier today, reports came in that the Crypto-Mining exchange known as NichHash was hacked causing roughly 4700 Bitcoins to go missing from a number of users accounts. At the time of the hack, 4700 Bitcoin was worth roughly $57 million and it is now worth around ~$70 million.
NiceHash was founded in 2014 as a cloud-based cryptomining market place that allows people all over the world to rent our their spare computing power in order to generate new Bitcoins.
Well as of this morning, NiceHash users reported that their Bitcoin wallets had been emptied out. NiceHash has even confirmed on there end of the data security breach after taking site offline for maintenance:
NiceHash has paused its operations for the next 24 hours while they attempt to figure out the exact number of Bitcoins that were stolen and how the attackers performed their attacks.
If you have a NiceHash account, it is recommended that you change your passwords.
I doubt they were really hacked. NiceHash looks like a low-budget scam operation. They probably just took the money.
It's definitely possible. I'm not mining bitcoin or using their service.
It really boils down to do you trust the exchanges and the pools you are mining in regardless of the coin you are going after.
