Do logical people still believe in a Narendra Modi-led BJP government, after the current situation of the country?
Yes, many do.
In the 1940s the newspapers were about whether India would survive the brutal chaos of the partition and beyond.
In the 1950s, we had unending news on the chaos from state reorganization and yearly famines.
In the 1960s, we had news filling on wars and whether India would survive.
In the 1970s, it was about the massive unemployment and super inflation.
In the 1980s, if you read about a few dozen people gunned by ULFA, Khalistani forces or any of the dozens of terror organizations, a reader would have been just oh! not again. Holy sites would be desecrated, planes would be hijacked and bombed, a Prime Minister shot in office, a whole city engulfed in cyanides etc. No big deal.
In the 1990s, the newspaper story might be about the near bankruptcy of the country, the massive terrorism in Kashmir, ethnic cleansing Pandits - not to mention almost yearly government changed, sanctions imposed etc. Our major cities like Mumbai would be engulfed in massive bombing incidents. Our defence minister carried cash and worst terrorists to get back our airlines hijacked to Afghanistan. In the same decade our finance minister took the gold treasury to pledge for loans in London.
In 2000s, our newspapers would be reporting about the siege or the Parliament in Delhi in 2001 and the siege of whole Mumbai in 2008. Once again, we would be like oh!
Now, even a single death becomes a national news and we are like OMG the world is ending. While our ancestors were like oh just a few dozen people were killed by Ranvir Sena or LTTE or ULFA or Kashmir terrorists - our standards are significantly higher. This is good.
When Nehru talked about his dream in Tryst with Destiny, we didn’t ask how many of those dreams were satisfied after 17 years of rule. When Indira promised to remove poverty, we didn’t ask her how much poverty was removed in about 17 years of her rule. Now, we are asking our leader all dreams to be fulfilled in 3 years. And that is a good thing.
Do you think cow violence is new? It happened even during best of our past as a few people are sensitive about it. The cow laws were enacted in Nehru’s times. Do you think journalist killing is new? Happened a lot in the past.
We have the luxury of talking single deaths only because our situation is significantly better - way better than what our parents and grandparents have seen. We have education and jobs. Famine is a word not in our dictionary. We don’t have wars. We don’t have any threat of India collapsing. We don’t have any significant terrorist violence. Our cities have been protected far more against terrorism at a time when European and Middle Eastern cities are engulfed in uncontrollable terrorism [even while sitting right next to the source].
We have enough peace and luxury to ponder on questions like these.
