Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire – The triumphant return of classic role-playing
Introduction
We've mentioned it before, but we couldn't be happier with the fantastic resurgence of classic Western RPGs in recent years. This genre, practically abandoned for far too long, provided us with countless hours of pure fun in the late 90s and early 2000s, experiencing all sorts of epic and complex adventures in front of our computer screens.
Now it's time to review Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, the sequel from one of the main drivers of this type of game's revival, so we had high hopes for it. Did it live up to expectations?
Narrative and Story
First and foremost, we want to make it clear that this is a very classic adventure that seeks to emulate, as faithfully as possible, the feeling of playing a tabletop role-playing game with pencil, paper, and dice, making its narrative one of its main pillars.
This time, the story is a direct sequel to its predecessor, so we recommend playing it first before jumping into this second installment, as you can even import your save file to preserve all the decisions you made. Even so, the game does a great job of summarizing the events so we know who we are and how we got here.
Without giving away any spoilers, an ancient god has possessed a gigantic statue and is roaming the Deadfire Archipelago sowing chaos, which will lead us to embark on an epic naval chase across the region. The plot is full of memorable characters, well-written dialogue, and decisions with real consequences that shape the story's development.
It's a title with a huge amount of text, designed to be played calmly, savoring its narrative as if it were a good book, including "choose your own adventure" style events and dice rolls based on statistics.
Gameplay and Exploration
Deadfire follows the classic top-down RPG structure, putting you in control of a group of adventurers as you explore cities, accept side quests, uncover optional storylines, and delve into dungeons filled with traps, puzzles, and dangerous creatures.
Conclusion
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is an exemplary sequel: bigger, deeper, and better in almost every way, without losing its classic essence. A gigantic, well-written, challenging adventure brimming with possibilities, it can easily exceed 50 hours of gameplay.
If you enjoyed the first game or like classic Western RPGs, it's a highly recommended purchase.
