United Nations Uses Ethereum Blockchain to Aid Syrian Refugees

United Nations has implemented one of the largest uses for the Ethereum blockchain for a charitable cause by aiding hundreds of thousands of Syrian Refugees. This project was completed on the 31st of May by the United Nations World Food Programme by distributing resources using tokens of the blockchain platform which would be redeemable in all participating markets. The initiative was led by Parity Technologies, which is a blockchain startup started by the Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood.

A Consultant working for the WFP recently said:

"All funds received by the refuges from WFP were specifically used to purchase food items such as olive oil, pasta and lentils."

The initiate is planned to be expanded to refugees in Jordan as soon as August. The effort is set to cover the entire refugee population in the Middle-East by 2018, by giving a detailed analysis of the uses cases possible for the region. The project is also working in close collaboration with Humanitarian agencies working as part of the 'Zero Hunger by 2030'. Such applications of blockchains expand the scope of the technologies reach beyond the world of finance and data storage.
