Ubuntu 18.04 released, and why it is very important for eosio.
(Versión en español: Ubuntu 18.04 y el por qué es muy importante para eosio)
Last week we got our local Ubuntu GNU/Linux 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver Release Party. It means the most popular operating system used to run an eosio block producer has released a new version, and that version is going to be supported until 2023.
Currently, many eosio block producers are joining efforts to run different testnets, like my favorite, EOS Nation’s scholar testnet planning how the eosio main net would work starting June 1st. It gives us just the right time to switch to latest Ubuntu LTS version, compile the eosio project there and configure the VPNs between all nodes. We had great chat with people who have already installed Bionic Beaver and already started seeing the new changes, like the network configuration, which changed completely. Some people like it, some people don’t (like me, who does not like YAML). But it is important to have a sable node that will have stable security updates until year 2023.
We also talked about the need of Debian packages for eosio and talked about the attempts to build the packages without success. The community members with the most experience told me they were interested in helping creating the deb packages, so I plan to chat with them during the week, but I think I’ll wait for the DAWN-4 tag.
I was glad to see the IT and developers community together, interested in blockchain technologies, and even when no one there was an investor, they already had the base idea of how it works and some basic concepts. It was great to stop hearing about ICOs for a full night.
And we had cake!
👍Great article Stuardo, we were also testing out the latest Ubuntu 18.04 release this week to see how it all works with EOSIO, so far so good! No downsides on our part.
