The Financial Crisis - The real start of Cryptocurrency

in #blockchain7 years ago

After reading 'Quote of the Day - Leadership' by @Ejemai, I reflected on my Leadership course notes from my MBA.

I came across this interesting quote in a set of slides presented by Professor Owen Hargie - Professor of Communication at the University of Ulster and Professor Dennis Tourish - Professor of Leadership and Organizational Studies at Royal Holloway, University of London.

In the presentation titled 'Leadership Fundamentals', Professor Tourish discussed an article by Dominic Barton in the Harvard Business Review 2011 titled 'Capitalism for the Long Term'.  The article discusses the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis and can be found here.

Barton stated that "Business Leaders face a choice: They can reform the system, or watch as the government exerts control"

Professor Tourish wanted to point out another statement made in the article which I think is appropriate to my title for this post.  It is considered the main CONCERN of Dominic Barton in regard to lessons learnt from the financial crisis.

Dominic Barton is the Managing Partner for McKinsey and Company leading the firms focus on the future of Capitalism, and the role business leadership can play in creating long term social and economic value.

Barton speaking at the FPA financial services dinner in 2017 - YouTube link also talks about business leaders requiring to be engaged, and if there is ever a time for business leaders to engage it is now.  Well it was also the time for business leaders to engage in 2011 according to the HBR article - Has nothing changed in 6 years?  Have no leaders in the finance industry engaged?

It DOES appear from the Youtube video that Barton still believes that the social contract between the capitalist system and the citizenry needs to be addressed.

I believe it has already RUPTURED and the severely damaging result is the further development of blockchain technology and the ability to develop cryptocurrencies and all the associated projects arising from the "Internet of Value".

Interesting to note that Barton did not mention Cryto and blockchains in his after dinner speech...... although he gave a positive review of Don Tapscotts book "Blockchain Revolution".  His 2015 recommended reading list also included "Digital Gold: Bitcoin and the Inside Story of Misfits and Millionaires Trying to Reinvent Money by Harper, 2015.

Well done to Mr Barton and a great leader to whom many of our finance and banking leaders should take advice from.

STATS: 2 hours research and writing.

Thanks to @Ejemai for his post, which urged me to go back and review a bit of my MBA work and course notes.  This may well be a tremendously valuable hidden aspect of this platform, allowing for further education, research and VERY VERY valuable articles in the future.

Great Stuff to the Stemit platform also, thanks
