Mandzukic goes to World Cup history with an own goal
With a header leading to the opening goal, Mandzukic was the first player to score a goal in the final.
Mario Mandzukic assisted Croatian defender Antoine Griezmann in the 18th minute. Instead of hitting the ball, the 32-year-old striker hit the post.
Prior to Mandzukic, the World Cup never had any net-player in the last 20 finals.
Mandzukic's "accident" is also the twelfth phase of the 2018 World Cup. This is a new record, and more than double the previous record at the 1998 World Cup.
After an equalizer, Mandzukic redeemed the ball with a 2-4 draw in the 69th minute. Croatia's center-backs had three goals and an own goal in the World Cup.
With France's 4-2 win over Croatia, this year's finals were also the most goalscorers from 1966 (England won 4-2).
The record for the number of goals in a final was seven, the only record of Brazil's 5-2 win over Sweden in 1958.
