When pride goes wrong;

A wise man once said,

Nothing in excess is ever a good thing.

This also includes the sense of pride. What makes pride negative is simply because it focuses on the ego and self at the expense of the congregation.

To much applauds and praise can expands an individual's ego and builds a thirst for external validation. We'll experience a hard time with self-motivation and find it difficult to be successful if we relent solely on the praises and applauds of others for motivation. Nevertheless, undeserved praises can get one into the bad habit of boasting to extort praise.

Basically, those with too much pride and egotism will evolve a sense of dominance and superiority over others. It's absolutely impossible for a proud being to seek for help from other individuals, and this could make their life pathetic and miserable. As a result of this, we generally don't like to be surrounded with those who are arrogant and proud.

Moreover, pride doesn't have to be bad all the time, it's quite healthy to receive and give praise to someone who did a job well done. Don't get it twisted, don't mix appreciation with pride. Pride is simply the attitude of the individual after he has been applauded by others, how he behaves then shows if he's proud or not. Essentially, as long as people admit praise with a balance of humility and pride, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being known of doing a job well done.

In as much as we foster the positive aspects of pride and hide our ego in check, pride could be a real blessing. Never forget pride is simply based on high standards of living, living up to them and averting narcissism.

  • Hang out with the right crowd
    There are thousands of ways and techniques to nurture pride and avoid selfishness. We literally get on the right path when we surround ourselves with the right kind of people, this will help us maintain our right path in life. A wise man said;

You are the sum of five people you spend the most of your time with.

Searching for the right kind of people isn't a hard job though, they are the ones who provide encouragement and support just when you need it, unfortunately they'll be honest with you. Most especially those who allot praises when it isn't needed could over-inflate your pride and egotism. And also if we spend almost 100% of our time with those who offer appreciation and gratitude when you've done something good, they could help you create a healthy sense of self.

  • Stay humble
    We can possibly feel a sense of pride and still exhibit humbleness and humility. Just because you achieved something or did something exclusively well shouldn't make you go out of your way to boast or brag in order to seek people's attention. Learn and strive to be comfortable with the fact that you are doing your possible best without having any validation from an outside source.

  • Do what you love
    It's naturally that humans needs more external validation when they aren't contended with what they have. For instance, if you wish for a job with a good pay, you tend to develop an inflated pride to protect yourself from opposing feelings. It's very true that work don't always have to be fun, but in other words you should obtain some good satisfaction from it without having to boast and seek rewards all the time.
