Filing for bankruptcy and enjoying being an adult

Today I started my process of filing for bankruptcy. Never would I have thought it would come to this. But alas here I am in defeat. As a single parent I just want to be able to buy a home. And my credit and debt are keeping me from doing so.
Has anyone else gone this route? What was your experience in it? Will I regret it later?
Hopefully this will help me get back in the right direction. And help me and my son have a decent chance at a decent life. It's overwhelming the amount of bill collectors call I get. To the point I just never answer my phone anymore.
