How I Stop Worrying About How to Play Arkham Horror and Sold It

Well, here is the story of a medical bassist dungeon master who struggles with a board game called Arkham Horror.

I consider myself as a gamer. I play board games on regular basis and happened to be a part of a couple of role playing game session. In my country, (Turkey) finding people to play board games is hard because its not a well known hobby, so introducing new games to people around me and spreading the hobby is my mission. To achieve my goals, me and one my friend play board games on his Twitch channel and welcome questions from Turkish audience.

Here is the video of our Twitch session in Turkish

So we tried Arkham Horror. Oh boy...I love the theme. I love the books of Lovecraft. I love the setting in which Cthulhu and cultists live. But the game….

Arkham is a fictional city takes place on horror books of H.P. Lovecraft. In his books, Lovecraft has created a vast world of alternate realty in 1920’s. With the help of cultists originated from Arabia, god-like monsters try to come to our Earth from interdimensional portals.

Arkham Horror is a co-operative board game that players are working together and trying to close interdimensional portals which monsters emerge and kill the monsters that terrorises the streets of Arkham city. Game mechanics control the opening portals and roaming monsters. The game is published from Fantasy Flight Games which is known for high quality games.

Before playing game I made a quick research about the game and found out that the game is a little bit hard to beat. That is ok with me. I haven’t won single game in Pandemic yet either. But man, Pandemic works…. It flows….Pandemic is a great board game yet it is hard to beat.

What makes Arkham Horror problematic is not being hard to beat. It doesn’t flow. Because there are a lot of tiny unnecesseray rules, you miss the big picture. You happen to look rule book frequently. And game lasts...like forever. Especially if you play with 4-8 people it turns out to be real agony.

So here’s the take home message of this post. If you are new to board games, stay away from Arkham Horror. If you consider yourself a gamer and you are a curious guy, then find a guy who owns it and give it a try. But if you are anyone who wants to play good co-operative game go get Pandemic or Dead of Winter. Those two are the ones I tried so they are the only ones I can recommend. You can name other good co-op games you tried on comments.
