“like fear, we live in the countryside.”

“like wolves, we are viciously hungry.”

—Monica Robinson, EARTH IS FULL; GO BACK HOME.

synopsis:

A COSMIC UNDERTAKING, A HESITANT STORY OF ANGELS, A COLLECTION OF RELIGION AND WHIMSY.
THE ATMOSPHERIC RAMBLINGS OF AN EMPYREAN POET.

EARTH IS FULL; GO BACK HOME is the second poetry book from independent author and artist Monica Robinson. This collection spans millennia and mythology, as timeless as it is modern, guaranteed to resonate with even the most resistant. From conversations with guardian angels to odes to Achilles’ rage, EARTH IS FULL; GO BACK HOME pays homage to old myths and creates new stories all at once.

For fans of Andrea Gibson, Allen Ginsberg, or anything in between, this is the collection for you. As always, “if you are still here: thank you”.

My thoughts:

As I have stated in past post, Monica Robinson is possibly one of my favourite poets and is far too underrated for her own good. I was so excited for this release that the second pre-orders were available, I ordered my copy. Once I finished the reading for my class I began reading EARTH IS FULL. Maybe it was because it was late at night and I was tired and my brain had turned to mush by that point but I found the beginning to be a little underwhelming. There was talk of angels and a god on trail—for crime we do not know. We read about angels riding the same bus for 19 hours too scared to leave and face the unknown.

There are conversations between couples on earth that seem to be falling apart, lacking the words to communicate and celestial couples talking about about smoking in break rooms and the cathedrals being empty and cold, how they too are much like humans—more like us than we could ever know.

This collection is broken into three parts: poetry, love letters to untitled souls, and brief poems that describe the poet herself.

For as much as I loved this collection there was something that I felt was missing. Maybe to was the vulnerability that Exit Wounds held or perhaps the brash look at life after dealing with mental illness. I am unsure and have yet to find the right words to describe this unknown feeling, but nonetheless I still gave EARTH IS FULL 4.5-5 stars if only for the reason of it being wrote by my favorite poet.

Highly recommend.
