I Built a Mini Business Simulation as a Student — Here Are 5 Decisions That Change Profit

Most business classes teach profit as a formula.
But in a real business simulation, profit is not just “revenue minus cost.” Profit is the result of many small decisions fighting against each other.
Recently, I tried to design a mini business simulation for students. The idea is simple: every team manages a virtual company and makes decisions about price, product quality, marketing budget, distribution channel, and customer retention. After each round, the market reacts.
The most interesting part is that there is no perfect answer.
If a team raises the price, the profit margin becomes higher, but demand may fall.
If a team spends too much on marketing, sales may rise, but cash flow becomes dangerous.
If a team improves product quality, customer satisfaction improves, but production cost also increases.
If a team only focuses on short-term revenue, it may lose long-term trust.
This is why I think business simulations are powerful for students. They do not only test business knowledge. They test decision-making under uncertainty.
In my model, the five most important decisions are:
Pricing — Do you want more customers or higher margin?
Marketing — Are you building awareness or just burning money?
Product quality — Can your product support repeat purchases?
Channel strategy — Are you selling directly or through partners?
Risk control — Can your company survive a bad round?
The team that wins is not always the team with the highest revenue. Sometimes, the best team is the one that understands why its strategy worked or failed.
For me, this is the real value of a business game: it turns abstract knowledge into visible consequences.
