I think the term “racist” has been defined a little to broadly of late. I interpret it to include race-based hatred and negative racial generalities that are unsupported in fact.
That being said, I think referring to what’s going on in a country as a shit show is a little less mean spirited than calling a country a shithole. Also, trumps remark was colored by lots of other insensitivities. It’s easier to give Obama the benefit of the doubt for such comments.
Problem people have with Trump is he is not politically correct. The man is not a racist. Being America First is refreshing. We cannot save anyone from drowning if our own heads are underwater. In my opinion Obama was a racist but he never spoke without having things focus grouped first. We never really got to see the real Obama but on a very few occasions. On the other hand with Trump we see a man standing on his own never having been groomed by a bunch of political elitist with their wet fingers in the wind hunting for the next term in office placating to the whims of a few load victim groups.
