Them not focusing upon the social media aspect of things allows the DApps to take over in that area. That is one form of decentralizing and getting out from under Steemit.
In terms of the development, I do not know. I cant tell if they will allow more outside developers to see what is going on. We will have to watch the interaction with steemit and the witnesses.
