Chapter 19: Echoes of the Dead
📖 Previous Chapter / 上一章: Blood on the Spire 第十八章:血染穹顶
The heavy golden doors slammed shut, sealing us inside a rising glass coffin with a ghost.
My breath hitched. The hyper-frequency blade in Elias’s hand cast a sickly orange glow across his scarred face. Five years. I had buried him with my own hands under the red dust of the wastelands. Now, Pan-Asia had dug him up, hollowed out his soul, and stuffed his corpse with corporate cybernetics. This wasn’t just murder; it was a blasphemous violation of a hero. Pan-Asia wasn't just a greedy corporation anymore—they were absolute monsters, stripping away the dignity of the dead to build their mechanical empire.
"Elias... it’s me. Yun Feng," I choked out, my gun lowering by a fraction of an inch.
"Target acquired. Threat level: Maximum," Elias responded. His voice was a horrific, synthesized monotone, entirely devoid of the warmth that once defined the man who saved my life.
He lunged. In the confined space of the elevator, his speed was terrifying. The glowing blade swung in a deadly arc aimed straight for my neck.
Clang!
Lu Yan intercepted the strike. She had stepped in front of me, raising her cybernetic arm to block the blade. White-hot sparks erupted as the hyper-frequency edge bit into her chrome plating, making the metal shriek.
"He's not your captain anymore, Feng! He’s just a meat-puppet!" Lu Yan gritted her teeth, her hydraulic servos whining under Elias's immense, unnatural strength.
Old Chen didn't hesitate. "Down!" he roared, firing his heavy revolver point-blank at Elias's chest.
The neural-chip gave Elias inhuman reflexes. He kicked Lu Yan back into the glass wall, twisting his torso just enough so the armor-piercing rounds merely grazed his black composite plating. Without missing a beat, Elias backhanded Chen with his armored gauntlet, sending the old smuggler crashing to the floor, blood spraying from his lips.
In three seconds, my team was down. The elevator continued its high-speed ascent, the city lights blurring into a neon streak outside the glass.
Elias turned his dead, glowing blue eyes back to me. He raised his blade for the killing blow.
Warning. Lethal trajectory detected. Engaging evasive override.
The Suit’s cold logic flooded my brain. My dead left eye burned like a supernova, projecting a rapid sequence of red vectors into my vision. Before Elias even swung, I saw the exact path of the blade. My body moved on its own—ducking under the searing heat of the sword and driving my fist, wrapped in a scrap of EMP-laced knuckle dusters I’d scavenged earlier, straight into the neural port at the base of his neck.
Elias convulsed. The blue light in his eyes flickered wildly, turning a desperate, erratic amber.
For a split second, the machine faltered, and the man I knew looked through.
"Feng..." Elias gasped, his voice suddenly raw and painfully human. "Stop them... they have... a viral payload... in the..."
Before he could finish, the amber light snapped back to a chilling, steady blue. The corporate programming reasserted its iron grip. With a mechanical roar, Elias grabbed me by the throat and slammed me against the reinforced glass. The glass cracked into a terrifying spiderweb pattern. We were hundreds of stories in the air, the wind howling outside the fracturing pane.
Lu Yan, recovering her footing, overloaded her arm's plasma cell. "Get off him!" She drove her glowing fist directly into the elevator's main control panel, bypassing Elias entirely.
The elevator screamed. Emergency brakes shrieked as the car violently decelerated. The sudden shift in gravity threw all of us into the air. Elias lost his grip on my throat. As we crashed back to the floor, the cracked glass window finally shattered outward, sucking the freezing, smog-filled air into the cabin.
Elias slid toward the gaping hole, his heavy armor pulling him out into the night. He drove his blade into the metal floor to stop his fall, dangling halfway out of the shattered elevator, hundreds of feet above the neon abyss.
The elevator screeched to a halt at the 99th floor. The golden doors pried open, revealing a blindingly bright, sterile white laboratory.
"Go!" Chen coughed, dragging me out of the shattered car. We stumbled onto the pristine floor of the penthouse level, leaving Elias trapped in the ruined elevator shaft.
But as I looked up, the relief died in my throat.
At the center of the massive, sterile room stood Dr. Vance, the lead bio-engineer of the Pan-Asia Board. Behind him, suspended in a massive vat of translucent blue fluid, wasn't a computer server. It was a grotesque, pulsating human brain, wired directly into the city's power grid.
Vance smiled, adjusting his pristine glasses. "Ah, Yun Feng. You're exactly on time. We've been waiting for that eye of yours. The assimilation can finally begin."
He pressed a single button, and the massive steel doors behind us locked shut.

It sounds they are lured in.
Why is Old Cheng called: old smuggler, is this an expression or was it his former "job"?
It feels a bit odd if machines can be made the damaged body of those passed away are used as machines. I also find it surprising there is still, although the soul left the body, some human memory behind which can be triggered.
If comes to the brain... Braincells are already used instead of chips so by using this the story is even less fiction. I wonder what people will say about it in a few years or twenty years if they read this.
I hope you are fine. Don't forget to rest. Like you said bugs will always show up.
A creative weekend!

You read so deeply into the core of this world! Yes, they definitely walked right into a trap. As for Old Cheng, "smuggler" was indeed his actual former profession in the underground world before things got even darker.
You hit on the exact horror of this cyberpunk setting: the corporations don't care about the "soul." To them, the human brain is just the ultimate biological hard drive. The fact that real-world science is already experimenting with brain cells instead of silicon chips is exactly what inspired this chapter! Sometimes reality is far more terrifying than fiction.
Thank you for the wonderful insights and the weekend wishes. I am definitely taking some time to rest and recharge away from the "bugs" this weekend! 🍀
