Why someone becomes obssessed for brand-new products?

One of my colleagues is extremely fond of mobile phones and accessories. She always tries to buy the latest iPhone model as soon as it is released. Last time, she purchased the iPhone 16, and now she is planning to buy the latest iPhone 17. I think she had spent around $1000 on the previous one, and now she wants to upgrade again.
I genuinely do not understand why people become so obsessed with gadgets and accessories. I have been using a Chinese-brand phone for the past threee years, and I am perfectly satisfied with it because it performs all the tasks I need. My phone is capable of doing every task that her expensive phone can do. So, I don’t see the point in spending my hard‑earned money on something that loses value so quickly.
Although she is senior to me and earns more, she is not wealthy enough to buy such an expensive phone through cash. Instead, she is planning to purchase it on EMIs, which I personally think is unwise. Loans should ideally be taken for things that offer long‑term returns. She could have saved that money and invested in stock or gold, but instead she is spending it on something that won’t last long. It's her life, so I have no right to interfare in it. But I am free to express my view.

I get what you mean. I would like to buy the latest iPhone, yet I’m still using an old iPhone XR. We, as humans, indulge in acquiring things or set goals to reach the next big milestone. It drives people, some for status, some for money, some for societal norms. I know the tricks my mind plays, pushing me to chase desires, so I cannot fully confront it.
Jezelf kennen als het gaat om hebberig zijn of het nieuwste van het nieuwste willen aanschaffen is al heel wat waard. Je zou tegen jezelf kunnen zeggen dat je het nu niet nodig hebt en het geld op een spaarrekening zetten waar je niet makkelijk bij kunt. Op je neemt het bedrag op in allemaal centen. Geld tellen zou ook gelukkig maken, maar volgens mij heb je dan wel een pakhuis vol geld nodig anders ben je zo uitgeteld.
Ik heb niet zo nodig het nieuwste van nieuwste nodig. Ik vind alles wat oud is er mooier uitzien, het duurzamer en niet allemaal van die goedkope plastic troep met chips die je hersens beschadigen en beeldscherms die je ogen verpesten.
Die touchscreens doen het bij overigens zelden dus ik zal wel dood zijn. LOL
