Don’t Eat the Axolotl

In the waters of Lake Xochimilco, in Mexico, the little axolotls once lived peacefully and quietly, and at first glance they seem to wear an almost human smile.

Now, unfortunately, in their natural habitat they are going through a serious crisis that could wipe them off the face of the earth. These charming salamanders are aquatic, which makes their possible extinction even more heartbreaking.

Once there were nearly six thousand specimens of this small salamander, but now only about one thousand remain in the wild.

It is human recklessness that endangers the axolotl—polluting its habitat, introducing exotic species that prey on it, and even consuming it as if it were a snack.

In a few years, we may only see these little creatures in captivity, reduced to pets, without understanding why they must live in a small fishbowl, never feeling the waves caused by breezes that play joyfully with the water.

En las aguas del lago Xochimilco, en México, solían vivir en paz y tranquilos los pequeños ajolotes, que al verlos a primera vista lucen una sonrisa casi humana.

Ahora, lamentablemente, en su hábitat natural, están pasando una grave crisis que los podría extinguir de la tierra, aunque estas simpáticas salamandras son acuáticas, lo cual sería extremadamente triste.

Pasó de haber casi seis mil ejemplares de esta pequeña salamandra por kilómetro cuadrado a apenas mil en total en estado silvestre.

Porque es la inconsciencia del ser humano la que pone en peligro al ajolote, causando la contaminación de su hábitat, introduciendo especies exóticas que terminan depredándolo, e incluso por consumirlo cual si fuera un snack.

En unos años, posiblemente, solo podremos ver a estos animalitos en cautiverio, reducidos a mascotas, sin entender por qué deben vivir en una pequeña pecera sin sentir jamás las olas causadas por las brisas que juegan alegremente con el agua.
