From Spam to Blackmail
Anyone with an email account knows how common it is to receive extortion or blackmail emails. It's almost always the same story: they claim to have sinful images that will be shared with all our contacts unless we make a payment.
Although I don’t check my email very often since WhatsApp and Telegram became more common, whenever I do, I also check my Spam folder—because sometimes emails that should land in the main inbox end up there.
I remember the first time I was blackmailed—it was a shock. You know, it’s something we don’t expect to happen to us, even though we know it happens quite often to many people.
After the initial confusion, and thinking it through, what the email claimed was more than impossible in my case. And even if they really did have compromising images of me, I’m the kind of person who wouldn’t consider that material worth paying to keep hidden.
I used to receive at least one of these emails every few months, but they became so routine that I don’t even read them anymore. After all, they can’t have material of something that never happened…
But well, it turns out that these extortion scams do work, because every now and then I see on the news that criminal groups have been dismantled. But since they’re profitable, new “entrepreneurs” in blackmail keep popping up.
Just in case, friends—and only just in case—it might be a good idea to cover the cameras on our devices, just to be safe.

Quien tenga un correo electrónico sabrá que es bastante común recibir correos de extorsión o chantaje, casi siempre es la misma historia: que tienen imágenes pecaminosas que serán divulgadas a todos nuestros contactos si no realizamos un pago.
Aunque no reviso muy a menudo mi correo electrónico desde que se hicieron comunes los mensajes de WhatsApp o Telegram, cada vez que lo hago reviso también mi bandeja de Spam, porque a veces hay correos que deberían llegar a la bandeja principal pero terminan allí.
Recuerdo que la primera vez que me chantajearon fue un shock, ya saben, es algo que no esperamos que nos suceda a nosotros aunque sabemos que es algo que sucede bastante a menudo a mucha gente.
Después del desconcierto inicial, y al pensarlo bien, lo que decía el correo era algo más que imposible en mi caso, y aunque realmente tuvieran imágenes comprometedoras mías, soy de las personas a las que ese tipo de material no lo consideraría digno de pagar para que no sean revelados
Solía recibir al menos uno de estos correos cada pocos meses, pero se volvieron tan rutinarios que ni siquiera los leo ya. Al final de cuentas no pueden tener un material de algo que nunca pasó...
Pero bueno, resulta ser que esto de los chantajes extorsivos si que dan resultado, porque cada tanto veo en los noticieros que grupos delictivos fueron desmantelados, pero como son lucrativos se vuelven a crear nuevos "emprendedores" del chantaje.
Por si acaso amigos, y solo por si acaso, sería una buena idea tapar las cámaras de nuestros dispositivos por si las dudas.
