Apple Pie

Today should have been my birthday.
In the old days apple pie was what was baked on special days like these. A lot has changed. Both grandmothers are gone and if I read the sign Apple pie - recipe by grandma I always check but.. Those apple pies look and taste by far not like those my grandmothers used to baked and how I would bake them.

It's a long time ago I had a decent piece of apple pie and what I hate most is the fact the pieces of apple are so damned hard. We always used the goud reinet and later it became the still green granny smith, sugar and cinnamon were added to the pueces of apple + raisons.

Today it's all tasteless and salt/sugar is limited or no longer in it. The custard is missing like the raisons and marmelade on top.

No salt meaning the extra iodine added to salt, because we all have a dangerous lack of it, is no longer consumed. It's fake anyway since thebamount is so extremely small it actually adds nothing.

Apple pie, especially warm, is today a vague memory of grandmother waking up early to bake, coffee and tea time at set times and birthday parties the family gathered together for a special treat.

Our grandparents always have there secret recipes in cooking…

Let me use an example in our Nigeria “jellof rice”..

Our jellof rice we usually cook using gas, is not as sweet as the jellof rice our grandma cooked using firewood..

Same ingredients but different “fire”.

When I asked, my big sis… she will say the firewood cooks it better by touching every part of the food.. for me, that’s not enough reason

As a child, I loved this delicious pastry. They sold triangular pieces in bakeries. But, since 1992, everything has changed in Venezuela. Many foods have disappeared. We've had to adapt. I still dream about the taste of those apple pies .

De niña me gustaba mucho este rico pastel. Vendían trozos triangulares en las panaderías.

Pero, desde el año 1992 todo cambió en Venezuela. Muchos alimentos desaparecieron. Hemos tenido que adaptarnos. Aún sueño con el sabor que tenían esas tortas de manzana 😋.

It sounds as if the change is worldwide. I also like the pie mixed with pieces of apricot or peache. It tastes softer and sweeter.
