Hello my dear Steemians,

Pete was a man in his 60’s he lives in outskirts of the town because since he retired and moved completely to land. That was his dream to have his own land, his vegetable field and also some livestock. He had some chicks the number was slowly growing because Pete did not eat all the eggs but let the chicken to grow their chicks.

One day it was beginning of autumn he was on market and heard that one of the women who was his neighbour were there too and was looking for a goose, she was thinking about the Christmas dinner and she also advised to Pete to buy now a young goose if he would like to prepare goose for the family dinner.

Pete this year had good news from his daughter who was going to visit him for few days with her son and husband. Pete was excited about that and while hearing about goose he was interested in the idea and also bought a young goose.

While in his garden the goose immediately run into garden, Pete gave him name “Goldie”. Initially Goldie was a bit scared and was hiding himself. Next few days when Pete was feeding Goldie and speaking to him, it started to follow Pete. Within next few weeks Goldie was attached to Pete and followed him everywhere. When Pete was speaking to himself and asking himself something his friend Goldie did answer, Pete was surprised but he liked that.

Slowly Goldie became his good friend, they go everywhere together even for shopping Goldie was following Pete. Everyone just laughed seeing them together.

The time slowly was approaching to Christmas and the time when daughter and grandson of Pete supposed to come. Pete looked at Goldie who also looked back into his eyes, who did not realise what fate is expecting him.

It was a hard week for Pete to decide what to do, at the end he thought Goldie is my friend and a company but not a food, decision was made, there was different menu for Christmas.

When Pete when to train station to meet his daughter and grandson Goldie was there too. Once the grandson of Pete jumped out of the train he noticed Goldie and asked who is it? Pete introduced Goldie and told this is my friend Goldie and this is my grandson Matthew. Both looked into each other eyes, Matthew laughed and gently touched Goldie who was gentle too and let to strike himself.

Pete only thought that it was good idea to keep his friend and not to use him as Christmas dinner.

I'm loving this happy ending!

I also love this ending, although initially was thinking about different way :)

Yes, at first I was a little anxious thinking it might end up on the menu, luckily it didn't!

Geese make excellent companions and guard dogs, and in many countries they keep their owners company and even carry all sorts of things. I, too, would never eat my goose at Christmas; I’d rather go without meat. I enjoyed reading your story; a friend is indeed better than a meal. Geese can, by the way, live to a very old age.

It is unusual but I think it definitely could be great companion, actually if htey live long life that would be really good to see how long they could be in the family. I can imagine that once such pet becomes a friend it will not be possibel even think about any kind of food from it. I am glad that my story was interesting for you.

I had them and so did my grandfather. They can become 20-30 years old.
