Argiope argentata among rosemary leaves | Venezuela.

Greetings, friends of CCS! Today I'm back with an observation that took me several days. I had to be very patient to get the shots I wanted of this spider species.

For many days, my eyes spotted a spider weaving its web among some rosemary plants in the garden. It was large, about 4 centimeters in diameter with its legs extended. Day after day, it remained with its underside facing forward and its back facing a wall, which obstructed my view of the photos.

I captured several shots of its underside. I uploaded them to Google Lens, and it indicated that it possibly belongs to the Argiope family. This spider had the habit of remaining motionless for several days, which I found frustrating. But it was also very interesting, as it made it easier to photograph parts of the spider that aren't commonly seen.

That species, known as the "silver spider," also called the "writing spider," is common in the Americas, and its description matched what little I saw.
It's famous for the silvery back that gives it its name. And that typical Argiope posture, with its legs extended in an "X" shape. But what if we had a close relative or an endemic species with a similar pattern in Venezuela?

Habitat and behavior.

Every day, I approached with my camera, trying different angles, almost begging it to turn around. And then, one day, luck was on my side. Perhaps a stronger breeze, or the need to adjust a silk thread, made it turn. And there it was! An explosion of color: its back revealed an intricate pattern of shimmering silvers, intense yellows, touches of orange, and black stripes that contrasted magnificently. It was a true living jewel.

Classification

IMG_20251111_162214_

Based on its shape, the black and yellow colors of its abdomen, the predominantly silvery back, and the markings I observed, I believe it is the species Argiope argentata. However, one can never be 100% certain without further analysis. Here is the classification obtained from iNaturalist.org.

Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Arachnida
Squad: Araneae
Family: Araneidae
Genus: Argiope
Species: Unknow; Probably: Argiope argentata

Your photography is amazing. The spider's arms and legs, the webs are clearly visible through your photography. I really enjoy your photography. The small sharp edges are captured by the photographer. I wish you a safe life. Thank you very much for taking such beautiful photographs for us.
