Kumamoto Is So Much More Than Kumamon
Daikanbō, Aso City
The most celebrated viewpoint in the Aso region, offering a breathtaking 360-degree panorama. From here, the streets of Aso, the Five Peaks of Aso, and the Kuju Mountain Range unfold magnificently before your eyes.
Kusasenri-ga-hama
One of Aso’s most iconic attractions. Rolling grasslands, gentle hills, and tranquil ponds create an open, sweeping landscape. In the green season, the scenery is lush and soothing. From here, you can gaze at the steaming Nakadake crater or enjoy a leisurely horseback ride.
Mount Aso Nakadake Active Crater
A colossal volcanic crater measuring 600 meters in diameter and 130 meters deep. Still active today, it allows visitors to witness white plumes of smoke rising dramatically from the earth. Helicopter tours are also available for a spectacular aerial view.
Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine
A shrine steeped in mystery, often described as a gateway to another world. Towering ancient trees, moss-covered stone paths, and 97 stone lanterns lining the approach create an ethereal atmosphere. It also served as a filming location for Natsume’s Book of Friends and Hotarubi no Mori e.
Oshitoishi Hill
Scattered with massive, pyramid-shaped stones—many believed to possess magnetic properties. Said to have been an ancient site of prayer, it also offers expansive and awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape.
Kumamoto Castle
One of Japan’s three most famous castles, also known as Ginkgo Castle. Vast in scale and strategically formidable, it is home to around 800 cherry trees, making it especially enchanting in spring.
Suizenji Jōjuen Garden
A nationally designated scenic and historic site, built in 1632. This Momoyama-style strolling garden is centered around a serene pond, complemented by artificial hills and pine trees. Its cherry blossoms are particularly beloved in spring.
