One Hour from Lhasa — Discovering the Legendary City in the Sky

in CCS10 days ago

Just over forty kilometers from Lhasa lies Ganden Monastery, the first monastery founded by Tsongkhapa and the birthplace of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. For this reason, Ganden Monastery is regarded as the foremost among the six great monasteries of the Gelug tradition.

Perched high upon the mountain ridge, its red-and-white structures resemble a vast fortress rising into the clouds — a true “city in the sky.” Prayer flags flutter along the ridgelines, while a long kora path winds quietly around the monastery. Devout locals circle the sacred route, and monks devote themselves to study and practice.

There is no overwhelming crowd here, no restless noise — only wind, prayer, and an atmosphere of quiet reverence.

If someone were to write a Chinese version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, one might almost imagine this place as the inspiration for Hogwarts itself.
