Comenzó a jugar fútbol al mismo tiempo que rugby, para terminar decidiéndose por el primero, al regresar de Escocia tuvo un breve paso por el Salernitana Sport, para luego recalar en el Milan, el club donde alcanzaría la gloria.
Su entrega en el terreno y su compromiso con el equipo fueron sus baluartes, siempre mostró garra y eso lo hizo valerse de la titularidad en todos los equipos que jugo, siendo siempre un referente. a nivel de títulos colectivos se muestra en la élite del fútbol mundial, ganando desde la liga local hasta el campeonato mundial de fútbol.
en al año 2011 anuncio su retiro momentáneo del deporte rey por un problema ocular, hasta regresar a las canchas el siguiente año, ese mismo año, en mayo, anunciaría que se marcharia del AC Milan, junto con una estela de estrellas que para ese momento jugaban en dicho equipo, como Van Bommel e Inzaghi. En febrero del 2013 ficho por el Sion, donde estuvo como jugador-entrenador hasta mayo de ese mismo año.
Como entrenador, inicio su carrera en el Palermo de la serie B, donde estuvo por poco tiempo, logrando 7 puntos en 5 partidos. De ahí paso al OFI Creta de Grecia, del cual dimitió por problemas con la directiva, ficho luego por el Pisa, donde también tuvo un paso fugaz, para luego, en el 2017 recalar nuevamente en el Milan, esta vez como entrenador, puesto que al día de hoy sigue ejerciendo.
Debuto con la seleccion el 23 de febrero del 2000, jugo un total de 73 partidos con la camiseta de Italia y marco 1 gol. Se retiro de la misma en el año 2013.
En total jugo 586 partidos en clubes y marco 13 goles, su palmares incluye:
- Copa de Italia
- 2 Supercopas de Italia
- 2 Serie A
- 2 UEFA Champions League
- 2 Supercopas de Europa
- Copa Mundial de Clubes.
- Eurocopa sub21
- Copa del mundo: Alemania 2006.
