Citroën 2 CV Club del año 1984

The Citroën 2 CV had several versions throughout the years that it was in production. In this case it is the 2 CV Club, which was exported to Germany in 1984.

The Société Anonyme Automobiles André Citroën company presented, on Thursday, October 7, 1948, at the Paris Motor Show, France, the first model of the Citroën 2 CV Type A. It was the almost definitive version of this popular utility car. Only in 1949 would it obtain approval to begin production. The name of the Citroën model, 2 CV, responds to a tax regulation in force in France. This determined the sale price.

The CV (chevaux à vapeur, horsepower) was a measure, which came from the time of steam engines, and which laid the basis for measuring the power of internal combustion engines. In turn, CVs were used for decades in France to give a tax valuation to cars in that nation.

Citroën 2 CV 6

Starting in February 1970, a new Citroën model, the 2 CV 6, began to be marketed. The difference was in the increase in engine displacement, which raised the tax valuation. Now it became 3 CV.

It is from this change in cylinder capacity and increased tax valuation that the name was taken for the Citroën 3 CV produced in Argentina as of 1969. That Argentine version corresponded to the 2 CV 6 from France.

Starting in 1979, the model changed from 2 CV 6 to 2 CV Club. It is precisely the model that we were seeing in this note, but in the version that was marketed in Germany in 1984.

The motor

The engine was the well-known two-cylinder boxer with a displacement of 597 cubic centimeters and an output of 29 HP, or 21 kW, at 5,750 revolutions per minute. The torque was 39.2 Newton-meters at 3,500 revolutions per minute.

The cylinder diameter was 74 millimeters and the piston stroke 70 millimeters. The compression ratio was 8.5: 1. Before continuing I make a clarification: the displacement is taken from a German brochure, which has three Citroën models, all with the same engine.

If we do the calculation, with the diameter and stroke, the displacement shows that it would have 602 cubic centimeters, like the Argentine 3 CV, why the difference of 5 cubic centimeters less? I do not know. I clarify it because some reader will notice.

Suspension, brakes, steering and transmission
The independent suspension in the four wheels was by means of longitudinal oscillating arms, with two horizontal springs of long stroke and separated action.

The front brakes, located at the output of the gearbox, were disc. While the rear ones were drummed and had a double hydraulic circuit.

The steering was rack and pinion. The gearbox was four-speed synchronized forward and reverse. The clutch was of the dry type of a single disc and the front wheel drive.

Dimensions, capacities and consumption

The measures of the Citroën 2 CV Club were the following: long, 3,830 millimeters; high unloaded, 1,600 mm; width, 1,480 millimeters and unloaded clearance, 150 millimeters. The curb weight was 600 kilograms and the maximum allowed weight was 930 kilograms.

The fuel tank had a capacity of 25 liters. Consumption in the city was 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers traveled. While en route, at 90 kilometers per hour, it was 5.4 liters for the same distance.

The maximum speed was 113 kilometers per hour. The tire size was 125 SR 15 and the trunk capacity was 220 liters. But you could remove the back seat and quadruple the volume.

The equipment

Over the years he managed to improve the equipment of the Citroën 2 CV. But it was always an ultra utility car. Although for the year 1984 it had many improvements than in previous years.

I still had the ability to remove the front seats, like the rear. That made it possible to use them on a picnic, for example. Or to expand the rear cargo volume, as I mentioned before.

This model had automatic seat belts in the front seats and in the back seat as well, but without being automatic. The seats were made of striped jersey. The steering wheel was padded with a single spoke.

The headlights, which were height adjustable **, were square, unlike the Citroën 2 CV Charleston where they were round **. Those square headlights began to be used from the year 1974.

Final thoughts

The technical data, such as the pictures, are taken from a German brochure of Citroën Automobil AG (Aktiengesellschaft, joint-stock company), which is dated January 1984.

I received that brochure by mail, the old way of sending informational material from one country to another, on Monday, May 14 of the same year. It should be remembered that the Citroën 2 CV, in its versions, was produced in France until 1988 and from that moment, until July 1990, it was manufactured in Portugal.

A version exported to Germany, in the mid-eighties, with some differences from the versions that we knew in our country. All thanks to a vintage document that I kept for more than 36 years ...
